La Brea

From the very beginning of the La Brea journey in 1989, they haven’t lost their passion for great food. It’s who they are as people, as bakers and as family. In 1991 La Brea Bakery wins “Best French Bread” in Los Angeles in a blind taste test hosted by the Food Paper and in 1992 they opened a larger bakery in central Los Angeles to serve the growing demand for breads and pastries from stores and restaurants from Santa Barbara to San Clemente. In 1995, they began developing a par-baked process and in a taste test conducted by the San Francisco Chronicle, La Brea Bakery’s par-baked Sourdough Baguette won the competition against local sourdough breads to the surprise of San Francisco residents, consumers known for their community allegiances. In 1999 La Brea opened a café at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, California and in another taste test conducted by the San Francisco Chronicle, La Brea Bakery’s olive bread wins. More awards follow and in 2001 the Washington Post awarded La Brea Bakery’s Sourdough Baguette with first place in their artisan bread round-up. In 2003 Opera Winfrey featured La Brea Bakery’s Granola on her talk show as one of “Opera’s Favorite Things for Spring.” In 2006 Bon Appetit names La Brea Bakery’s Rye Loaf the winner with five stars in a taste test of European-style rye bread. In 2009, they introduced a new line of Take & Bake frozen breads and launched the Artisan Bread Stuffing – the first of its kind and just in time for the holidays. Today the brand is looking at plans to go non-GMO and last year just launched their Reserve line of breads made from single origin heirloom wheat grown in Big Sky Country, Montana.
